Jose Canseco Apologetic, Vulnerable in A&E Documentary

Jose Canseco: The Last Shot, a documentary about Canseco, aired on A&E October 21 2008. According to the New York Daily News, the made-for-TV documentary showed Canseco's apologetic and vulnerable side. Canseco now wishes he had never written the book in the first place. If given the opportunity, Canseco said he would apologize to Mark McGwire and the other players he implicated in Juiced.

"I made a lot of mistakes in baseball, obviously using steroids, bringing steroids into the game. But I think the biggest mistake I made was, I should have not written (Juiced), The more I think about it, the more I regret mentioning these players in my book because I admired them, I respected them. But at that point in time I was so mad at Major League Baseball, so disappointed at them, and I felt like I was alone. And I felt like I needed to put them in my book as evidence to show the world that I was telling the truth. I never really realized this was going to blow up as big as it was going to blow up and hurt so many people. If I could meet with Mark McGwire and these players, I definitely would apologize to them because I think it was, the more I think about it the more wrong I was."

As previously reported, Canseco has fallen on hard times financially. After earning over $45 million in salary alone during his MLB career, Canseco has nothing to show for it. He recently lost his $2.9 million California home.

"It's all come to an end," he says, staring at the once-lavish home and pool that sit unused. "I don't own anything. I don't know exactly where my next paycheck is going to come from."

Canseco also discussed concern for his health considering his long-term use of steroids.

The show also follows Canseco through a series of medical appointments with Santa Monica physician Dr. Brent Michael. Canseco tells Michael he wants to wean himself off steroids for good and restore his testosterone levels, since quitting cold turkey isn't working.

"I have no sex drive whatsoever. Zero," says Canseco, who is filmed in one sequence meeting Michael with current girlfriend Heidi Northcott present. Canseco admits to bouts of depression and wanting to be left alone.

"Steroids and the use of steroids destroyed my life completely," he says. "Maybe (steroid use) will change some things chemically in me. I don't know what's going to happen."
